Amsterdam Finest Restaurants: Recommended by Teleport

Have you ever walked around the city not knowing which restaurants are worth checking out for lunch or dinner? Nothing is more frustrating than browsing around with an empty stomach, finding it hard to make a decision. It’s always difficult to find the right place to eat in a new city unless you do your research properly in advance. But let us take all your worries away in magic Amsterdam and recommend you top 8 restaurants that will make you and your stomach happy!

Upon the arrival

We can imagine that some of you can be hungry upon the arrival to Teleport, so we don’t want you to wait long for your delicious meal and advise you to start with the best nearby restaurants.

Grand Café Hermes

This cozy café within a 5-minute walk from the hotel has an excellent tripadvisor rating, and one visit will be enough for you to understand why. Try their chicken sate or juicy homemade double burger- a specialty of the house that doesn’t leave anybody indifferent. Hermes is open only during the weekdays, but the good news is that Teleport reception team will be happy to give you a voucher for a free small appetizer there.

Bret

What looks like a red container is actually a hip spot with good food, cool DJs and ambient atmosphere. They call it an oasis in a concrete jungle, which describes Bret quite accurately. Stop by for their own Nordman beer or local biological lemonade after a long way, reserve a table for a nice dinner or dance to the joyful tunes almost till sunrise here.

In the city

Amsterdam finest restaurants are located not only around Teleport, but also in the heart of the city, where the choice is plentiful. As tastes differ and Amsterdam offers cuisine from all over the world, we will make it a bit easier for you with the greatest food from different countries.

The best Indian food- Shiva

Dive into the harmonious and relaxing atmosphere of this restaurant with a great service, luscious Indian cuisine with a comprehensive menu and modern design. A 3-course dinner with drinks for 2 people will be around €60, and is so much worth the money. Shiva is known among locals for their butter chicken, tikka masala, tasty naans and mango lassi.

indian-restaurant-shiva-amsterdam-2

The best Thai food- Bird

Thai food lovers will feel at home at Bird, where authenticity and quality come together. We would recommend you to go to the tiny café/takeaway of theirs right across the street from the bigger restaurant, as the food tends to be better tasting, faster served and cheaper there. The longer real Thai dining experience is of course guaranteed at the restaurant itself.

4014179

The best Dutch food- Hap-Hmm

If instead of international dishes you prefer to try some local Dutch dishes, then Hap-Hmm is your best choice! Their cuisine tastes like the yummiest home-made food at the Dutch granny’s  who puts extra flavors, love and care into it. They don’t accept reservations and the house is always full, so try your luck during weekdays just by heading directly to the location and mingling with locals. Hap-Hmm is closed on weekends and open only till 20:30 during the week. It doesn’t matter what you will pick from the menu, as everything will be a huge success and a nice introduction into the Dutch culture.

The best Belgian food- Lieve

This Belgian restaurant on a beautiful canal offers you way more than a regular dining experience, but three different ambiances instead. Amsterdam Teleport Hotel: 1 year anniversary

Amsterdam Teleport Hotel is celebrating its first anniversary on the 26th of June! A year full of hard work, thousands of guests from all over the world and changes passed by in no time. In a year we managed to build up a hotel experience to be proud of. Sometimes it is hard to believe it all started less than a year ago.  After a series of weekly blogs about Amsterdam’s most unique places, hidden gems, culture, food and must sees, we decided to dedicate this week’s edition to the hotel itself. Gain insight in how it all started, get to know the team and read all about last year’s highlights!

one-year-anniversary2

How it all started

Believe it or not Amsterdam Teleport Hotel  building went through multiple transformations over the past few years. From an office building to a long stay studio appartement  and eventually into a hotel. Amsterdam is one of the most remarkable cities  in the world. The historical city center, world class museums, the tolerant and easy going life attitude of its citizens, the coffeeshops and red light district attract millions of tourists. The existing hotels couldn’t keep up with the ever growing demand and more rooms were needed Amsterdam Teleport Hotel saw a huge opportunity to jump into a new adventure with a constantly changing market full of innovations . To be honest with you, almost none of us had any experience in this business and we had to build it up from scratch. The idea was simple: offer good value for money and make guests feel at home. Bring those two  together at a great location and the Teleport hotel concept was born.

one-year-anniversary3

The first guest

The last months before the grand opening were beyond crazy. Permits had to be arranged with the municipality, hotel staff had to be hired and of course the building was undergoing major changes. It had to be rebuilt and fully furnished. Maikel, Evgenia ( our hotel managers) and the construction team worked around the clock to make it all happen, get it done and  make sure we could open our doors by the end of June last year. The first day was a very exciting one, everything was new, the brand new team was ready to start and waiting for our first guests to arrive. The first weeks are crucial especially for a new hotel business. Do guests like the hotel, the experience and are they willing to recommend it to other people? It is all about reputation and good reviews in our business, and we still had to earn them. Luckily everyone was very happy with their stay, the team’s  personal approach, room and location.

one-year-anniversary4

Highlights

Last year, undoubtedly was a great year for us full of exciting highlights. None of us could predict the fast growth and constant flow of incoming good reviews. The first highlight was a fully booked hotel for the first time in September . You can only imagine how proud we felt. Then many others followed, such as finishing the second building in Amsterdam in November, our first big team dinner with lots of delicious food during Christmas, the opening of our sister hotel in The Hague (don’t miss it), the first Teleport golden egg hunt during Easter and last but not least decorating all the doors in different Amsterdam themes as a final finishing touch to the hotel.

From Panda suit to young and fresh

Throughout the year many new ideas were born and implemented. Some were more successful than others. While the Teleport concept and identity were slowly developing and  shaping we started to realize that the way we were presenting ourselves didn’t really fit the way we felt anymore. The hotel team is young and full of positive energy. A decision had to be made! Our panda suits (once you see them you will understand why we called them that way) had to go. We have replaced them by the nice slim fit t-shirts we are wearing today! We couldn’t be happier!

one-year-anniversary6

Teleport Power

From the very beginning the Teleport team has been a very close one. It has a unique mix of different characters with various  cultural backgrounds and talents. Our manager has done a great job putting all of us together. We are very different but all share a passion for people, the city of Amsterdam and are willing to work hard. One of Teleport’s greatest strengths is the freedom we get from the management to help building the concept and hotel experience. Everyone is encouraged to step up and contribute more than just the functions of the position they were hired for. This support and responsibility  for our hotel is what makes us happy, feel appreciated, important and what gives us the extra motivation to go the extra mile for our guests. That is what we call Teleport Power! :)

Amsterdam’s Best in 1 Day by Our Team

Every day we keep recommending you the best places in Amsterdam for having a coffee or drink, lunch or dinner, Dutch cheese or chocolates, good time and fun. We carefully select our favorite spots before sharing them with you. This time we went even further and explored Amsterdam and its finest with the whole team of Amsterdam Teleport Hotel. We hopped on the bikes and discovered the numerous food and beverage opportunities this marvelous city has to offer. Now we’re proud to share our impressions of the best day out in Amsterdam!

Westerpark and its heap of hip spots

It’s not a secret that the easiest way to get around the city is by bike, so don’t hesitate to rent one from us and follow our exciting bike route. We started with cycling through peaceful Westerpark with its more creative places like the Westergasfabriek with a great terrace and the Espressofabriek with freshly brewed coffee. In addition to drinks and snacks, there are lots of special events at the Westergasfabriek, like music and food festivals, local produce and flea markets, concerts, DJs and more.

One-Day-by-Our-Team2

Haarlemmerstraat and its choices

We couldn’t visit all the places that were worth it due to the time limit, but we will still mention them as they are deserve a special recommendation. In general, Haarlemmerstraat is full of cozy vibe coffee places, bars, coffeeshops and nice stores. Make sure to check out Two for Joy and Screaming Beans for a cup of good sustainable coffee, where baristas will tell you all about where their beans come from. Both of these places roast the beans themselves, which allows for extraordinary freshness of each cup you drink.

One-Day-by-Our-Team3

Stout!

Instead of stopping by for coffee, our team grabbed a drink at Stout! That’s a great café restaurant that serves delicious lunches and dinners with a beautiful food presentation. They also offer amazing plateaus with 10 different small dishes, ideal for trying by a larger group. Stout’s nice terrace is the best spot to hang out on a sunny day.

One-Day-by-Our-Team4

Cheese tasting

After the drinks Teleporters felt like having a bite, and what can be a better idea than having some cheese in such a case? Due to the central location of most of the places we recommend, it’s easier to visit them all in one day by bike or on foot. As we were cycling, we ran into our super talented artist Frankie, who created the hotel’s joyful chalkboard with all the must-dos! And when we finally reached one of the best cheese stores in town Reypenaer, the cheese food feast began. It’s not one of those typical touristy Dutch cheese stores, but it’s one and only that sells the finest cheeses with a long history of 110 years. They have mastered the craftsmanship here for you to be able to taste old traditional cheese like no others. Needless to say that it’s a heaven for your taste buds, and we enjoyed the variety and high quality of cheese there.

One-Day-by-Our-Team5

Sweet tooth’s paradise

After all the savory flavors it was time for something sweet, and we continued to our favorite chocolaterie and patisserie tearoom Pompadour. Each chocolate that you choose has an unforgettable deliciousness and mouth melting charm at this magical place. So we got a perfect selection of hand-made chocolates and were delighted with unique flavors.

One-Day-by-Our-Team6

The last good drink

Even though it was the best day out for our team, it had to finish at some point. So we celebrated this mini trip around Amsterdam with cheerful drinks at ‘t Loosje. It is a wonderful local bar that’s perfect for a beer with some international snacks, lunch or coffee on the terrace. A great place to mingle with true local Amsterdam people too.

If you wish to learn more about the finest places in town or follow our experience and visit them all in one day, don’t hesitate to ask any of our Teleport team members. We will be happy to help and make sure that you have the best time in Amsterdam!

The Coffeeshop World of Amsterdam

If you think this blog post is about the best coffee in Amsterdam, then you need to adjust your thinking to a local definition of a coffee shop. The Dutch coffee shops might serve you coffee, but usually you would come there to buy or smoke some weed. And you might mistakenly think that having a joint is legal in Amsterdam, but the truth is that it’s just tolerated by local authorities. Yes, you are allowed to buy and use soft drugs here and coffeeshops are fine to sell them to you, but technically it’s illegal for them to buy cannabis from the growers. Let’s dive into the mysterious world of coffee shops and learn more about the whole culture around it.

Coffeeshops-Amsterdam2

So what is allowed?

As a tourist aged 18 and above you are more than welcome in any of Amsterdam coffeeshops and you can buy up to 5 grams of cannabis per day. You can peacefully smoke it inside the place where you got it or anywhere outside, as long as it doesn’t disturb other people and is not close to schools or playgrounds. As you see, the main rule of the city is “Your freedom ends where my freedom begins.” So even when you’re stoned and can’t walk any more, be respectful and polite.

Don’t expect to combine a joint with a beer in a coffeeshop, as all of them have “no alcohol” policy. If you a tobacco smoker or don’t like your weed pure, then you will have to smoke in a separate smoking area due to the tobacco smoking ban in Holland. One way or another, there is no better place to enjoy soft drugs than Amsterdam, and the proof of this is 35% of all Amsterdam tourists who end up in a coffeeshop.

Which coffeeshop to choose

The constant law changes and attempts to criminalize cannabis in the Netherlands has hugely affected the amount of coffeeshops in Amsterdam. Hopefully 155 of still existing ones will be enough for your nice stay in the city. Which one to choose, when the variety of coffeeshops is so overwhelming? As you imagine, some of them have cooler vibe, others -higher quality weed, awesome interior or even great food for your munchies. So here is our subjective top 3 coffeeshops in Amsterdam:

Abraxas

Down a narrow alley, Abraxas attracts lots of tourists by its large weed menu, friendly staff and unique dream-like interior. The atmosphere is quite laid back and chilled there, while the product is of a fine quality.

Coffeeshops-Amsterdam3

Dampkring

There are 2 Dampkrings in Amsterdam, so make sure to choose the original one with its unforgettable visual experience, great marijuana selection and cozy vibe. This coffeeshop design is worth a visit by itself.

Coffeeshops-Amsterdam4

420 Café

This coffeeshop welcomes you with its dark wooden interior and super friendly and knowledgeable personnel. Loved by locals, 420 Café shows nature documentaries, offers free vaporizers and serves good weed.

Get high but be smart

Whether you have smoked cannabis before or not, you have to keep in mind that the stuff is strong in Amsterdam and it can hit you hard. So don’t hesitate to ask questions in a coffeeshop, especially when it comes to the effect and strength of the weed you’re buying. And please, do follow the instructions given, as very often tourists underestimate the quality of the local product and smoke too much of it. In case you feel adventurous or don’t like smoking, but want to get high, be very careful with space cakes. Although they look cool and promising, and you don’t feel it for a long time after eating, be patient and don’t eat more than written on a tiny manual that comes with it. We don’t want to preach, but we want you to have a good time in Amsterdam, that’s why we recommend taking it easy with soft drugs here. You didn’t come to this marvelous city to have a bad trip, so don’t buy stuff from the street, get your weed from good coffeeshops, smoke it there and know your limits.

Coffeeshops-Amsterdam5

There is a big difference between a coffeeshop and a smartshop, as the last one sells magic truffles to you (what used to be magic mushrooms before). They are hallucinogenic and have a stronger and longer effect on you. But that’s a completely different story, so don’t rush and start with a visit to a coffeeshop instead. And if you’re really into weed and all the culture, then don’t forget about the High Times Cannabis Cup in Amsterdam in November! But no matter what, please don’t smoke in the hotel rooms!
